Country music or country and western is a genre of popular music originated in the southern United States in the early 1920s. iTS roots originate from genres such as folk music and blues.

"Country music often consists of ballads and dance tunes with generally simple forms, folk lyrics, and harmonies accompanied by mostly string instruments such as banjos, electric and acoustic guitars, steel guitars as well as harmonicas." -says WIKIPEDIA

It became popular in the 1940s.

Its origins are also related to the American working class' folk music. They blended Irish and Celtic tunes, popular songs, traditional English ballads, or even cowboy songs.
